How To Mix and Match Patterns
Now trending this Fall: patterns, patterns and more patterns! With traditional styles seeing a come back, we’re seeing patterns becoming focal points in numerous designs. Patterns come in a variety of mediums; from textiles, to wallcoverings, to the design with in a stone. Finding the right balance of these can be intimidating but knowing the basics of how an assortment of shapes, scales and colour palettes work together will make the process seamless. Here are a few things to keep in mind when adding this trend to your home.
Pattern Sizes
When mixing patterns, size does matter. Use a large scale pattern as a starting point and then start to incorporate smaller patterns in various styles. For example, if you have a large scale floral print, accent it with a stripe or chevron elsewhere. Don’t forget to add solids in between to balance the look!
colour Palette
Having a unified colour palette will keep the patterns from overwhelming the senses. Try to remember the 60-30-10 rule. Keep 60% of the space in a dominate colour, 30% in a secondary colour and 10% for an accent colour. This balance of colour proportions will keep a room looking harmonious.
Texture
Even if it’s a solid colour, texture falls under the category of “pattern” in the design world. When designing a refined space it’s all about textural patterns, from a boucle lounger to a solid oak side table. These patterns a more subtle and can be used alone for ultimate refinery or as a backdrop to bold motifs.
Knowing What Doesn’t Work
There are some pattern “rules” that will almost always be applicable; stripes look great with florals, plaid and polka dots don’t mesh, ect. But, unfortunately, the reality is that every space and design taste is different. When adding patterns in your home there will be a little trial and error until you find what makes your space feel like you.
Adding pattern in to a design is something to have fun with. Keep these simple things in mind and go make your home trend ready!
