Personally: If I wasn’t a Designer What Would I be…

It's the first week of back to school and it got us thinking; what would we do if we didn't become designers? Some of us did schooling for other professions, others just have interests in various careers. So we went around the office with this question, and in a parallel universe, these are the careers we would of had.

If I wasn’t an interior designer I would have become a real estate agent. I love a variety of home styles, and I'm overly fascinated by how people live and what their homes look like. With appreciation for so many different styles of homes, I know I can visualize what works in a space and what can make it more appealing to potential buyers. My visual mind would come in handy when trying to sell a home, or show future home owners how the space would work for them. I'm glad that my career is interior design but I knew real estate would be a great career choice to fall back on.

If I had to choose a career besides interior design, it would have been fashion design. I've always loved shopping; going to the mall to find the newest trending clothes. I'm creative at heart and always knew I would work in a creative field. I do find myself looking and saving outfit ideas on Pinterest, and clothes are the first thing I notice about someone (in person, or in the media). Being an expressive person, I love to show my personality in my work. Something that I feel I could express in both interior or fashion design.

This was a tough decision because being an interior designer is my passion but if I wasn’t an interior designer I would have wanted to work in criminal investigations as a behavior analyst. I've always been fascinated by psychology, learning why someone does the things they do and how different external elements impact us. One of my favourite things to do as an interior designer is learning how everything in a space can affect us, from what colours we choose to how much natural light is in the room. I guess you could say as an interior designer we analyze our client's lifestyle and personality to design them the best suited space.

If I had to choose another career, which would still be in a creative field, I would want to be a baker. Having spent so much time making treats with my Grandma (our specialty being lemon meringue pie), baking has always had a special place in my heart. I love sweets, and all the interesting and unique flavours you can combine. With baking there's both taste and beauty to consider, the endless combinations would bring a new challenge everyday. My obsession with the Food Network has also given me a pretty decent amount of knowledge too.

I have always loved homes and interiors. From the time I was a child, I would daydream for hours about designing spaces. In 1986, I got my real-estate license in Montreal, headed out to Vancouver to make some Summer money, and never returned to Quebec… much to my fathers dismay. The original plan was to work for my dad and step-mother, at their Re/Max agency. I often wonder how different my life would be had I not come out to Vancouver during Expo 86, and sold real-estate instead. It’s an exciting business, and I would have got a lot of joy helping people buy and sell their homes. Now I get my real-estate fix with shows like “Selling Sunset” and “Million Dollar Listing"... if only I had their paychecks!

This is a pretty easy question for me to answer, as I did have a previous life as a ballerina. I started ballet at three, and ballerina quickly became my "dream job".  As I got older and continued in the dancing world I knew it had become my life pursuit. After dancing for 17- ish years I unfortunately had an injury that I couldn't dance through. Had I not been injured, I think I would of stayed in the ballet world, as a choreographer, on stage, or wherever it sent me. Life today would be very different; but it would not have included many carbs. So, you could say life has a way of working out in the end.

Thankfully, we all ended up here in the interior design world! We're all so lucky to know and work with each other and our jobs are actually really cool (not to brag or anything... 😉)

Happy Thursday!
