Interior Design Trends for 2023

There is nothing that can show the change in time quite like looking back on trends – raise your hands if you too had a harvest gold kitchen appliance. While some trends are fads that fizzle out others can last decades, the trick is to see which trend is worth the investment. We compiled a list of 5 trends that are booming at the moment and have what it takes to last the “fizzle out” test.

1. 70s Fever

The 70s called, and they want to update your home. That’s right this year we’re seeing the resurgence of the good trends from the 70s. Don’t worry, some fads from the decade will stay in that decade – looking at you carpeted bathrooms. Warm woods, low plush furniture, bold patterns and earthy colour palettes are some of the key elements from the decade starting to make a move back into the interior design world.

2. Mixed Media Art

Art is such an important part of designing a home and a great investment when you find the perfect piece. But, there is nothing more true than “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” when it comes to picking out art. Everyone has a different style and taste, but more prominent trends rise and fall throughout time. Right now, the trend is all into mixed media art. Neutral colours and textured canvases all embody this upcoming movement.

3.Enclosed Floor Plans

Maybe one of the most controversial trends we could touch on is the enclosed floor plan. For years an open floor plan has been the most crucial element when remodelling or creating a dream home, but after nearly three decades the preference is shifting. The changes everyone’s lives took in 2020 created different ideas of a home and how we need it to function. Homes are no longer just places to socialize and raise kids; they are now daycares, offices, schools, gyms, etc. Having designated space and partitions from one task to another has expedited the enclosed floor plan trend.

4. Multi-Purpose Rooms

Let’s be honest, we live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth – but it just so happens lots of others want to live here too and our homes are getting smaller and smaller. Now, more than ever, we need to utilize all the space we have in our homes so they can function as all the places listed above – there is no longer that large empty (except for the piano no one knows how to play) room in today’s homes. Combining multiple needs into one room makes a home function from sun up to sun down.

5. Natural Stone Accents

Incorporating natural material with unique tones and textures is all over social media and will soon be your newest must-have. While marble is always a classic stone, we are starting to use more limestones, soapstones and other more subtle natural materials. Other than countertops, coffee tables and backsplashes the trend is also being incorporated with clay vases, stoneware and dinnerware, or handmade ceramics. An item with a slight imperfection is even more sought after.

Not every trend is going to be for everybody – but the inspiration to make it your own will be. When we create a space for our clients we want it to feel like them, as well as being a space that won’t get dated quickly. Are there some upcoming trends that you are already loving, or (let’s be honest) already hating? Let the open vs. closed floor plan debate begin!

Happy Thursday!
